Episode Synopsis
Vegeta tells Nappa that they'll wait for the arrival of the traitorous Goku (Kakarot), and then kill everyone. Gohan is depressed about his own cowardliness, but Piccolo treats him harshly. Waiting impatiently, as a diversion Nappa flies off to have a little fun with the people of Earth! Three hours then pass, and Piccolo and the others fight Nappa once again!! Meanwhile, after crossing the Snake Road, Goku arrives in the lower world and flies off on Kinto-Un. Carrying out his secret plan, Piccolo grabs the Saiyan weak spot, their tails. But since Nappa has strengthened his tail, Piccolo is instead defeated! Krillin's special attack, the Kienzan, is also dodged by Nappa, and as the danger continues, Gohan and the others sense the approaching Goku's ki. An impatient Vegeta orders Nappa to kill the three of them, and after being angered by Gohan's desperate counterattack, Nappa fires a tremendous energy bullet at him. At that moment, Piccolo spreads out his body to cover Gohan!

Herms
This was a decent episode, though I think the main thing it really did was to get me excited for the next one. The scene where Goku arrives back on Earth and rushes off to the battlefield was handled very well; the music they chose for this scene worked great. Other than that, it's nice to see that the "everybody fails to hurt Nappa" phase of the story is just about done with already. The left-in filler with Nappa attacking the TV crew was kind of pointless, but it did allow the episode to end with Piccolo's protecting Gohan, so I guess it worked out well.

Hujio
It was good, for a setup episode, but it was forgettable. Although, I will admit that it did its job, since I'm pumped for the next episode. I still like most of the music, as long as most of it isn't overused too much. I did love how it was played off that Nappa left to go "play", but we didn't have to actually watch him do any of it. I still could have done without the TV crew filler, but I understand how it was needed to setup why Nappa suddenly leaves. Though, it'll be nice to finally be done with the whole "Nappa's invincible" thing, because I'm ready for some ass-kickin'.

Manga Comparison
This episode covered a little over three chapters of the manga; the remainder of chapter 219 and the entirety of chapters 220-222.

Chapter 219 – "Three Hours"
The episode starts on the third to last page of 219. It shows Piccolo and the others standing around, but it leaves out their conversation where Piccolo chews out Gohan for wimping out during their team assualt on Nappa earlier. This might be because there's a left-in filler scene later that has a similar conversation.
There's a brief bit of filler showing Goku nearing Enma Daio's check-in station, and Kami-sama sensing his arrival there.
After that, there's a longer filler scene where Piccolo chews out Gohan some more (although as previously noted, in DragonBall Kai this is the first time he does it). Gohan then tries to walk away from the battlefield, but Nappa stops him.
After this is yet another left-in filler scene, where Nappa blows up the TV camera crew who have been filming them the whole time. I'm guessing that the reason all this filler was left in is so that the episode can end with Piccolo shielding Gohan.
Chapter 219 ends at about 10 minutes into the episode (when Vegeta says that the 3 hours are up).

Chapter 220 – "A Faint Light"
The scene showing Goku's return to Earth is split up so that we first see him reach Enma Daio's check-in station, then the scene shifts back to Gohan and the others, and then we see Kami-sama go pick up Goku and teleport him back to Earth. In the manga that part is all one scene, and occurs after Piccolo and co. are about to begin their plan of grabbing Nappa's tail. In DragonBall Kai, the first scene is moved up so that Goku is shown reaching Enma Daio's check-in station right before Vegeta declares that the 3 hours are up, and then Kami picks him up after Piccolo and co. prepare to fight Nappa again.
The eyecatch comes 9 pages into chapter 220, and the chapter ends about 16 minutes into the episode.

Chapter 221 – "The Cornered Mouse Bites the Cat"
The narration that opens this chapter in the manga is gone, which makes perfect sense since it's not needed midway through the episode.
The chapter ends about 20 minutes into the episode.

Chapter 222 – "Son Goku's Great Approach!!"
Here's a weird one: as Goku is approaching, Vegeta tells Nappa to kill Piccolo and the others. In the manga, he says that 3 of them together could be a problem, while in DragonBall Kai he says the 4 of them together could be a problem.
Nappa's line right after the line mentioned above has been removed. Nappa doubts that Goku could really have a battle power of 5,000, but he's glad he gets to kill everyone. In DragonBall Kai that line is replaced with Nappa saying he'll kill Piccolo first.
Krillin's line where he complains about not being able to move has been left out, which was originally said right before Nappa charges Gohan.
The episode ends right at the end of chapter 222, with Piccolo shielding Gohan from Nappa's blast.

Other Notes
The next episode preview shows Goku hitting Nappa with various attacks, indicating that the next episode will cover at least chapters 223 and 225.

Original Broadcast Comparison
After a brief recap, the episode begins at the same point as DragonBall Z episode 026. A lot of the major filler scenes from these episodes have been removed, most notably that of Krillin and Piccolo splitting their bodies into multiple people and taking on Nappa, six-on-one. Overall, we covered two whole episodes of DragonBall Z, episodes 026 and 027, each making up a half of the episode.

I won't really say anything about the editing itself here, but if you think the episode seemed to flow a little better than previous episodes, there may be a reason for that. This episode actually had a new editor, Maki Nobutaka. For those of you that aren't too familiar with the main Japanese staff, you might not realize what a big deal this really is. This is the first time in the history of any DragonBall anime production that featured a new editor. Fukumitsu Shinichi was the head editor for every single episode of DragonBall, DragonBall Z, and DragonBall GT, as well as all 17 movies. He was also brought back for the first 10 episodes of DragonBall Kai.

It appears that this may be the end of Fukumitsu's involvement with DragonBall. I'm not sure if things just weren't working out, or if someone at Toei didn't like how the editing was turning out. You may have noticed that in previous episodes we've complained about the editing, so maybe we weren't the only ones that noticed slipping. This is a real shame though, considering all that Fukumitsu has done for the franchise, but if it helps DragonBall Kai in the slightest, it may be worth it in the end. Only time will tell.
